NUT members support action – 85% vote yes to one day strike

NUT plans joint strike action with Tower Hamlets NUT on Wednesday 30th March

We have received the results of our ballot for strike action, which closed on Tuesday. Across Camden 85% voted in favour of a one day strike, and 79% voted for further action on a turnout of 40%.

Given all the difficulties with running a full postal ballot this is a very good result, through which you have indicated your determination to make a stand against cuts in education provision. We would like to thank all NUT reps for the efforts they put into this.

The NUT is now proposing to call a one-day strike on Wednesday March 30th and will start preparing for that now. Before this we will be going back to schools and the Local Authority to see what can be done to protect those jobs and services that are currently under threat.

On the day we plan to hold a demonstration and rally which we will be asking parents and the wider community to support. The demonstration will go from the Crowndale Centre to the Town Hall and will leave at 10.30am.

The focus of the day will be to highlight the damage that spending cuts will cause to education and other public services. We will be contacting you soon with more details and materials, including a leaflet for parents.

Parental support

We are confident that we will get the support of parents across Camden and it is important that we do this. We want to explain to them the impact these cuts will have on education and ask them to join us on the day; we have always done this successfully in the past. We will be producing a leaflet for NUT members to hand out to parents and we would also encourage school groups to consider organising a meeting for parents.

NUT young teachers conference

The NUT young teachers conference takes place from 10-12 June in Stoke Rochford. This is a very popular and important part of the Union’s calendar, which any NUT member under 35 is entitled to attend. If you would like to attend please reply to this email ASAP as it fills up quickly.
